She’s drifting to sleep in my arms. All concerns and problems are for tomorrow. This moment, right now, my treasure is safe in my arms.

The scream jerks us both upright.

I curl my legs up and leap to my feet, pulling my pants up to my waist before I land on the ground. Swiftly I tie their knot, then grab my lochaber.

“Stay,” I order, motioning.

She shakes her head, eyes wide, trembling. Her fear is palpable, and my dragon roars, clouding my thoughts with the red bijass. Whatever has caused her fear will die. Touching her face with the tips of my fingers, I motion with my other hand towards the ground.

She nods, lips trembling, and it’s all I can do to not roar my rage. As I exit the cave, my blood runs hot. Something is going to pay.

The scream comes again, filled with pain and fear. It echoes off the trunks of the trees, making it hard to pinpoint a location. I close my eyes so I can better expand my senses. It’s too dark for sight, so the others will have to supplement.

A limb cracks followed by the creaking of a tree, and now I know the direction. Gripping my lochaber tight, I run through the trees towards my prey. A crunching sound is the next thing I hear, cutting off a whimper.

I’m close so I slow, crouching and creeping forward. A low grumble as I come around the base of another tree, and I see my prey.

It’s a harimauz. An alpha male one. Dangerous, four-legged creature with a huge mouth filled with rows of sharp teeth. Tusks grow from his lower jaw ending in sharp points. His fur is striped with strips of black, green, and orange that help it blend into the jungle. The Order hunts them for meat, but we usually have at least two of us, if not four.

He is occupied with the source of the screaming, an unlucky majmun, tree-dwelling creatures that live in packs. This one must have been too slow. The pack left it behind, a sacrifice for the survival of them all.

Perhaps, if I stay still enough, the harimauz will ignore me. If he’s full enough from his meal, I won’t have to fight.

That’s the rational thought. The dragon has other ideas. Rage still boils my blood, this thing made her feel fear. It challenged my superiority, my territory. No, it must die.

Instinct rides over rationality. Raising my lochaber, I run.

Ten strides from it, the creature looks up from his meal, growling in the back of his throat, baring sharp teeth. I roar a challenge, now that the element of surprise is gone, one way or another. The harimauz’s jaw is covered with the blood of its prey, and it looks as if he’s grinning. He welcomes the challenge, and so do I.

Wings spread, I slide through the air, gliding on the currents. The creature crouches as if he will spring to meet me, but as I arc down, blade at the ready, he leaps to the side.
